Moving in Riverdale: Co-ops, Hills and Why Trucks Skip the Henry Hudson Parkway

Riverdale feels like a small town inside the city: big co-op buildings on the ridge, houses on winding streets in Fieldston, and steep blocks down toward the Hudson. It is also an area where the fastest road for a car is closed to a moving truck.

Co-op buildings have rules

Many Riverdale apartments are in co-op buildings with a managing agent and written move rules. Ask early for the allowed days and hours, the service elevator reservation, any move deposit, and the certificate of insurance (COI) sample. Send us the sample; we send the COI your building asks for.

The roads a moving truck can use

The Henry Hudson Parkway is closed to commercial vehicles from 59th Street to the Westchester line, and so are the Mosholu and Pelham parkways in the Bronx (NYC DOT: parkway restrictions for commercial vehicles). In New York State, trucks may not use parkways but can use the interstate highways (NYSDOT: highways for commercial traffic). For Riverdale that usually means the Major Deegan Expressway (I-87) and local truck routes. It is a longer way in than many residents drive, so the arrival window accounts for it.

Hills, driveways and houses

Fieldston and Spuyten Duyvil have private and sloped streets, long driveways and houses with outside steps. Tell us if the truck can reach the door or needs to stand on the street. A longer carry is fine; it just needs to be on the estimate.

Moving out of the city

Many Riverdale families move north to Westchester. That is still a New York move under our NYSDOT license 34875. A move to New Jersey is interstate and falls under our federal license, U.S. DOT No. 967970.

Big apartments, big furniture

Riverdale apartments are often larger than in the rest of the city, with dining rooms, china cabinets and full bedroom sets. Plan which pieces come apart, and pack china and glass in small, well-padded boxes. If you are downsizing, decide what goes to family, storage or donation before moving day.

What to put in your estimate request

Both addresses, the building type and floors, the elevator rules, and photos of your largest pieces. The estimate is free and in writing; call (929) 232-3444 or use the quote form on our home page.

Before the move

  • Get the move rules and COI sample from both buildings.
  • Reserve the service elevator and confirm the time in writing.
  • Change your address with USPS and allow at least 7 to 10 business days (USPS: change your address).
  • Measure large pieces against the elevator door and the hallway turns.

Questions we hear

Can a moving truck use the Henry Hudson Parkway to Riverdale?

No. NYC DOT closes it to commercial vehicles north of 59th Street. Trucks use the Major Deegan (I-87) and truck routes.

Do Riverdale co-ops need a COI?

Most do. Ask the managing agent for the sample and send it to your mover a few days ahead.

Is a move from Riverdale to Westchester interstate?

No. It stays in New York, so it is covered by our New York license.
