Bronx Apartment Moves: Walk-Ups, Prewar Elevator Buildings and What to Ask Your Super

Bronx apartments range from large prewar elevator buildings along the Grand Concourse to walk-ups above stores and newer buildings with a front desk. The question that decides your move day is simple: elevator or stairs, and on which floor?

Prewar elevator buildings

Older elevator buildings often have one small elevator for everyone. Ask the super if movers can reserve it, which hours are allowed, and whether the building needs a certificate of insurance (COI). Send us the COI sample; we send the certificate your building asks for. Measure big pieces against the elevator door and cab, and remove legs or doors where you can.

Walk-ups

In a walk-up every box is carried up or down every flight. Use small boxes for heavy things and medium ones for light things, and label each box with its room. Tell us the floor numbers on both ends when you ask for an estimate.

  • Send photos of the tightest stair turn and the apartment door.
  • Clear the hallway and the landing in front of your door.
  • Take apart what you can, or ask us; we take furniture apart and put it back together.

Questions to ask your super

  • Which entrance do movers use, the front or a side door?
  • Can the front door be held open during loading?
  • Are moves allowed on weekends?
  • Does the building need a COI, and what must it say?

Getting the truck there

The Bronx has several parkways closed to commercial vehicles, including the Bronx River, Hutchinson River, Mosholu and Pelham parkways (NYC DOT: parkway restrictions for commercial vehicles). Moving trucks use interstates such as I-87 and I-95 and the city’s truck routes (NYC DOT: trucks and commercial vehicles (truck routes)).

Newer buildings with a front desk

Newer Bronx rentals often book moves through management, with a reserved window, a freight elevator and a COI. The rules are strict but clear. Book the window as soon as you know your date and keep all fobs and keys together for move-out day.

What to put in your estimate request

Both addresses, elevator or stairs on each end, the floor numbers, any building rules, and photos of your three largest pieces. The estimate is free and in writing; call (929) 232-3444 or use the quote form on our home page.

Before the move

  • Change your address with USPS; at a Post Office you can use PS Form 3575 (USPS: change your address).
  • Plan to defrost the fridge the night before if it is moving.
  • Keep medicine, documents and chargers with you.

Questions we hear

Do Bronx buildings need a COI for movers?

Many larger buildings do. Ask the super or management for the sample and send it to your mover.

How should I pack for a walk-up?

Small boxes for heavy things, medium boxes for light things, and a clear label with the room on each box.

Can moving trucks use the Bronx River Parkway?

No. NYC DOT lists it among parkways closed to commercial vehicles.
