Moving From the Bronx to New Jersey Over the George Washington Bridge

For most Bronx neighborhoods, the way to New Jersey is the Cross Bronx Expressway and the George Washington Bridge. It is a short trip on a map, but a move across a state line has its own rules, for the truck and for the paperwork.

The bridge rules for trucks

The Port Authority requires all trucks to use the upper level of the George Washington Bridge. Tolls are collected only entering New York; no tolls are collected entering New Jersey (Port Authority of NY & NJ: Truckers Guide (January 2026)). The Cross Bronx Expressway is part of I-95, an interstate open to trucks (NYSDOT: highways for commercial traffic).

It is an interstate move

A move from the Bronx to New Jersey crosses a state line, so it is an interstate move. It falls under our federal license, U.S. DOT No. 967970 (MC-432549). For interstate moves, the federal government explains your rights in FMCSA: your rights and responsibilities when you move and in the FMCSA: Ready to Move? brochure brochure. Ask for a written estimate and read what it includes.

Planning both ends

  • Your Bronx building may need a certificate of insurance (COI) and an elevator reservation.
  • Many New Jersey towns have their own parking rules; ask the town or your new building about loading.
  • Tell us the floors and any long carry on both ends when you ask for an estimate.

After the move

New Jersey gives new residents 60 days to transfer an out-of-state driver license and register their vehicle (NJ MVC: moving to New Jersey). Change your address with USPS before the move and allow at least 7 to 10 business days (USPS: change your address).

Common Bronx to New Jersey moves

The towns just across the bridge, such as Fort Lee, Edgewater, Cliffside Park and Hackensack, are popular with Bronx families. High-rise buildings there have the same building rules you know from New York: a reserved elevator, a time window and often a certificate of insurance (COI). Ask both buildings for their rules early.

What to put in your estimate request

Both addresses, floors and elevators on each end, the building rules you have, and photos of large pieces. The estimate is free and in writing; call (929) 232-3444 or use the quote form on our home page.

Timing tips

Bridge traffic changes a lot by hour. The crew plans around it, but an early start usually means a shorter day. Keep keys, documents and a first-night box in your own car.
