Most moving complaints start with a question nobody asked. Before you book any mover in New York, ask these five. A good mover is happy to answer all of them, out loud and in writing.

Hiring a mover? Ask these 5 questions

1. Are you licensed?

Interstate movers have a U.S. DOT number, and you can look it up for free on the FMCSA website. Ours is U.S. DOT 967970 (MC-432549); in New York we hold NYSDOT 34875 and in New Jersey NJPM 000930.

Question 1: are you licensed? Look up the U.S. DOT number on FMCSA

2. Can I get it in writing?

A written estimate shows the rate and the terms before moving day. Nothing should be decided for the first time when the truck is already outside.

Question 2: can I get it in writing?

3. What can change the price?

Ask about stairs, long carries from the truck to the door, extra packing and waiting time. In the Bronx and upper Manhattan, walk-ups and long carries are common; see our guide to Bronx walk-ups and elevator buildings. Know it before you book.

Question 3: what can change the price?

4. Do you send the COI?

Many NYC buildings need a certificate of insurance days before the move. Ask early, and ask who sends it. We send the COI your building asks for.

Question 4: do you send the COI?

5. How do you protect my things?

Pads, wrap and taking big pieces apart. Ask how the crew protects your floors, doors and the building’s hallways too.

Question 5: how do you protect my things?

Ask us all five

We are happy to answer every one before you book. Call (929) 232-3444 or send the quote form on our home page. Moving just one item? Read how to book a small move. We are a family business since 1999; our company facts page lists our licenses.

Red flags to watch for

  • No U.S. DOT number for an interstate move, or a number that does not match the company name on FMCSA.
  • A price only by phone, with nothing in writing before moving day.
  • No clear answer about stairs, long carries, packing or waiting time.
  • No COI when your building asks for one.
  • No pads or wrap, or no plan for your floors and doors.

Write the answers down and compare movers on the same five questions. The one that answers clearly, in writing, is usually the one that shows up ready.

Common questions

How do I check if a mover is licensed?

Interstate movers have a U.S. DOT number, and you can look it up for free on the FMCSA website. Ours is U.S. DOT 967970.

What can change the price of a move?

Ask about stairs, long carries from the truck, extra packing and waiting time. Know what changes the price before you book.

Why ask about the COI before booking?

Many NYC buildings need a certificate of insurance days before the move. A mover who sends it early keeps your move date safe.

Is a phone quote enough?

Ask for a written estimate. It shows the rate and the terms before moving day.

How do movers protect floors and doors?

Ask them. We use pads and wrap, take big pieces apart when needed, and plan the carry through the building.
